Salamander Pumps has chosen James Walker Keaflex to manufacture elastomer diaphragms for its domestic water pressure booster pumps. The ethylene propylene diaphragm is a component of the one litre pressure vessel in the company's ESP.CPV models that boost the pressure of single showers or whole house water systems.

Tooling for the moulded part was designed by James Walker Keaflex and manufactured in its in-house tool shop. With its multicavity design and precision tolerances, the diaphragm called upon the company's expertise in process engineering to ensure high quality and reliable manufacture.

The high specification EP62/65 ethylene propylene elastomer used for the diaphragm was developed within the James Walker Group. Approved to the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme for hot and cold potable water use up to temperatures of 85 deg C, the material meets the requirements of British Standard BS6920.

Being approved for potable water use, EP62/65 has a range of other uses within the water industry, including for gaskets and 'O' rings. James Walker's EP62 is also available with increased hardnesses, making it suitable for applications where greater mechanical strength is required, such as for tap washers and ball valve discs.

"After moulding, the diaphragms are post cured," said James Walker Keaflex managing director Ross Ryan. "This removes any volatile contaminants that could otherwise leach into the water."
