The number of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning in the UK is continuing at an alarmingly high rate. Everyone is at risk; however CO is most hazardous for groups including the elderly, unborn babies in pregnant mums and children.

Prevention is the key to tackling the problem. Proper installation and regular servicing of all gas or oil appliances should dramatically reduce the risk of CO build-up in your home, but even well serviced equipment can go wrong, and flues can become blocked between inspections, so properly placed CO alarms offer the best protection.

Approximately 100 people died of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the last two years. Faults within fossil fuel burning appliances can happen at any time, along with faulty flues these are blamed for the majority of these incidents. CO can also enter a property from adjoining households. Even with vital annual gas maintenance checks, CO leaks can occur.

Low levels of CO over a few hours can be as lethal as high levels over a short amount of time. So if tenants come home thinking they’re safe, they may risk not waking up in the event of a CO leak – unless they have an audible CO alarm.

That’s why Hackney Homes have decided to provide carbon monoxide alarms to all their tenants to protect them from this very real danger. Recent incidents across the country and especially in other London boroughs, along with requests from Resident Associations have driven the speed of this implementation.

Working with FireAngel, Hackney Homes decided FireAngel’s new CO-9X alarm ticked their significant list of criteria for a carbon monoxide alarm. This list included long term value for money, a guaranteed 7 year life product, diagnostic ability to prove alarm activity, fault LED, attractive appearance, ease of installation, pad printable product, easy to use test button (for elderly residents) and reliability. All these needed to be backed up with a strong after sales service with technical support.

Designed in the UK, FireAngel’s CO-9X complies with all the points above, whilst also incorporating the latest electrochemical cell sensor technology to provide peace of mind through reliability and accurate measuring of CO.
