Mitsubishi Electric hopes Boiler Scrappage Scheme will help increase take up of green technologies(26/01/2010)
The Boiler Scrappage Scheme offers a £400 incentive to households looking to upgrade their old heating system. The cash is available to anyone who replaces a G-rated boiler with a modern boiler, or a renewable heating unit. The Boiler Scrappage Scheme will help households cut their energy bills by at least £230 a year and significantly lower emissions, as over 70 per cent of the energy used in an average house goes on heating and hot water. “We were initially concerned that the scheme would only look at replacing old gas boilers for new gas boilers, which would have penalised green technologies such as air source heat pumps, so we are delighted that they have been included in the scheme,” said John Kellett, General Manager of Mitsubishi Electric’s Heating Systems Division. Ecodan air source heat pump system heats converted farm buildings in Northumberland countryside(11/01/2010)
Property developer George Bowlt is developing three stone cottages on the outskirts of Morpeth where there is no gas supply and options were limited to costly oil, LPG or electric heating. The cottages are 30 minutes from Newcastle Airport and have stone arch windows and doors, wooden beams, period features, fireplaces, underfloor heating and light tunnels delivering daylight into the heart of the building. The first to market has four bedrooms and picture windows facing an idyllic rural view; it is priced at £425,000. When George Bowlt was looking for a reliable heating system for his converted farm buildings in the beautiful but rugged Northumberland countryside, he looked at all traditional and renewable options before settling on the Ecodan® air source heat pump system from Mit... Ecodan provides sustainable heating to elderly resident(22/12/2009)
Ecodan is a modern air source heat pump which harvests renewable energy from the outdoor air and upgrades it to provide a constant supply of hot water and heating. It can deliver at least 3.5kW of heating energy for every 1kW of electricity it consumes. A bungalow in Stoke, home to three elderly residents, is benefiting from the latest sustainable heating after an Ecodan® air source heat pump was installed to provide all the hot water and heating needed. “The three residents are all over 60 years old and need a constant and reliable source of heating,” explained June Redfern, Senior Support Worker with Care UK and part of the team which manages the site. “The new system sits outside the property so the occupants don’t even notice it working away.” The installation into the suppo... Grants of up to £6500 are available through the £60 million package, to install low-carbon air source heat pumps for people who normally have to rely on oil or solid fuels. Since the launch of the Energy Assistance Package in April, over 25,000 households in Scotland have been given energy savings advice. In the last month, nearly 500 households have been moved to cheaper social tariffs and over 500 have received help to get all the benefits they are entitled to, increasing household income by, on average, £1,200 a year. Alex Neil, Scotland’s Housing and Communities Minister, has seen the potential that air source heat pumps can offer for himself, with a visit to the Li... [read full article]
Ecodan air source heat pumps provide heating and hot water to Great Yarmouth residents(27/11/2009)
Nine different-sized properties in Great Yarmouth will have traditional heating pushed aside for the installation of Mitsubishi Electric's Ecodan® air source heat pump (ASHP), which will provide at least three units of heating energy for every one unit of electricity it consumes. The residents in Great Yarmouth are set to save money on their utility bills with the installation of the technology that harvests "free" energy from the surrounding air and upgrades it to provide heating and hot water. The project, spearheaded and part-funded by energy agency Renewables East in conjunction with Great Yarmouth Borough Council, will monitor the ongoing fuel savings achieved in each property through the use of Ecodan. Mr Bird, a resident involved in the project, has had the storage heaters ... [read full article]

Solar Heating can provide energy to heat your home as well as heat the water(11/11/2009)
Solar water heating systems use heat from the sun to warm domestic hot water. A conventional boiler or immersion heater is then used to make the water hotter, or to provide hot water when solar energy is unobtainable. Solar water heating systems use solar panels known in the industry as ‘collectors’. These collectors are fitted to the roof of the house. These collect heat from the sun and use it to warm water which is stored in a hot water cylinder. Basically there are two main types of collectors: 1. Flat plate systems - which are made up of an absorber plate with a transparent cover to collect the sun's heat. These can be fixed to the roof tiles or integrated into the roof. 2. Evacuated tube systems - which are made up of a row of glass tubes that each contain an absorber pla... [read full article]

Understanding the potential of air source heat pumps(09/10/2009)
Fuel costs are continuing to rise year on year and in the UK, more people are suffering from fuel poverty, yet at the same time, we have to find sustainable ways of heating our houses to reduce our reliance on imported energy and lower our environmental impact. For the housing sector, this means adherence to the Code for Sustainable Homes, which sets strict targets for energy reduction. “Many alternative technologies have claimed to be ‘low carbon’ but few have lived up to expectations so far, yet heat pumps can deliver affordable and sustainable heating for our social housing sector,” explains John Kellett, general manager of Mitsubishi Electric’s Heating Systems Department. Many are aware of the efficiencies available with ground source heat pumps, yet few properties can afford th... [read full article]
