The most common HCFC, R22, is still in widespread use in both air conditioning and refrigeration applications. It is damaging to the ozone layer when released to the atmosphere. Use of HCFCs has already been banned in the manufacture of new equipment. In the next stage, the use of virgin HCFCs for topping up existing equipment will become illegal from the end of 2009.
